Copywriting Tips for Business Owners
Business owners are often told …
“Hey, you don’t have to hire a professional copywriter to write for you. Just learn to do it yourself. It’s easy!”
As one of those professional copywriters, my view is that it isn’t easy for someone who has not practiced, practiced, practiced! I think there’s data that says a person has to spend about 10,000 hours, perfecting a skill.
If you have that much time, in addition to being an expert in your business … go for it! But if not, I suggest hiring a professional copywriter who can take over this task for you.
Here are a few things I’d suggest you do to locate and then get ready for a pro:
1. Look at several web sites and get a sense of the person. We all prefer to work with someone we like, don’t you think?
2. See what kind of references they have. Testimonials from other happy clients on their site? Can you talk/email a few of them?
3. Look at some of their writing samples in the portfolio section on their site. Can you determine what’s good and what’s not? (Hope so!) Notice the headline, the lead paragraph and how the copy was developed.
Did it convince you to buy, if you’re the right target market, of course?
4. Have a chat with a few copywriters and ask questions. If someone can’t give you a 15 minute conversation … humm, that doesn’t bode well for me.
5. A good price isn’t a good deal, if it doesn’t accomplish more business, more sales, more calls — more of whatever it sets out to do, right? Be sure to hire a real pro!
6. Be ready to break out of your comfort zone, if you’re going to hire a big gun to take you to the next level in your business. Hint: You wont’ go anywhere, if you’re not willing to move from where you are now.
7. A copywriter who’s proficient in web copy, email marketing, direct response copy, print ads and video marketing can take your business to the next level.
So, if you’re ready to let go of your death-grip, control freak mentality — thinking you can do it all — find a copywriter you like and in whom you’re willing to trust your business success for 30 days.
Start off with one project and see how it goes. Then, if you like each other and your goals were me form an on-going relationship because if you’re smart (and I know you are), you will want to keep up your marketing efforts to keep growing!
To your marketing success!

Nice. I never have time to do proper copywriting- especially for my own clients. Knowing you can help out there too is a big relief.
Thanks a lot, Boyd!
